"A Reason To Live" by Matthew Iden

"But you were the only one in charge of the case, Marty," he said, stopping and jabbing a finger into my chest. "The rest of us got to stand by and watch it go down the tubes. A good woman died, a girl got orphaned, and we got watch Wheeler walk out with a smile on his face because you screwed up."

This is my first read of the five book series about Detective Marty Singer. Series, detectives, crime stories,  you're calling my name. In the late 1990's Marty was forced to watch a bad cop, Michael Wheeler,  get away with murder. Twelve years go by and Marty, now retired, gets a call for help. The  victim's daughter Amanda comes to Marty begging for his help. Someone is stalking her and she thinks its the guy who murdered her mother.

Amanda's need is giving Marty a new reason to go on since he's been battling cancer. Marty is going to help put this murderer where he belongs this time. Is the man who murdered Amanda's mother even the same guy who is now stalking her? Why would he wait twelve years to reappear?  So where has Michael been? Marty has his work cut out for him trying to uncover the truth. Maybe this time he can help Amanda find  justice for her mother. If his body can handle the pressure.

He's going to need help though just in case he can't see it through. He hooks up with an old partner even though they're not on the best of terms. They agree to help Amanda anyway. Not everyone they encounter, including the murderers attorney, Julia Atwater, is willing to help them. Their adventure will eventually bring them around to where it all began. Filled with action and few twists and surprises you don't see coming. All of it leading it back to giving Marty "A Reason To Live."

Descriptive writing along with some dry humor and I know you'll enjoy this book. Look for Pierre the cat, and his cattitude. This is what I like to refer to as a "comfort book."  Its the kind of book you come home and put your comfy clothes on and curl up with. Its inviting and reminds me of the writing in Robert Parker's "Jesse Stone" series.

I'm already hooked. Will be glad to read the next four books! Immediately in the first few pages I was drawn to the character of Marty Singer. He felt real and is a well in depth character.  I'm going to enjoy knowing him for five books.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer Publishing for a chance to read this series

"Brother" by Ania Ahlborn

ON SALE AT AMAZON ON SEPTEMBER 29TH; CLICK HERE

"Once upon a time, he had convinced himself that chasing girls would get easier, that he'd get used to it and these moments wouldn't affect him. He was waiting for autopilot, a way to disconnect himself from his emotions, a way to make his eyes glaze over like Wade's seemed to. He was tired of seeing the shock, the fear, the dread. But it had been years at this point. Autopilot had yet to come."  ..                                                                       Michael Morrow: Brother

Michael tries to go to sleep at night to the screams of girls trying to escape into the woods outside his house. He wishes him mother would handle these things while the sun is still shining. Welcome to the Morrow family. Deep in the heart of Appalachia, where even the police don't stop at their house. Michael doesn't want to be like the rest of the family. He's met Alice at the record store in a nearby town. Can he keep her safe from himself, from what he is- from what is family is? What will his family think should they find out about her? Maybe his brother Rebel thinks he can help him remember who he is and where he comes from.

Scary and creepy from page one when Michael is listening to the screams outside his window. Every page and every thing they do screams horrifying and scary. It makes you hope that there are not people like this out there in the world. There may just be though.

Michael, Misty and Rebel, children of Wade and Claudine Morrow. What happened to the older sister Laura Lynn? Dinner time is always a special time they spend together as a family. That's after Michael has fulfilled his duties in the basement that is. Michael grapples  trying to separate himself from this murderous family and what another life would be like.
The more time he spends with Alice the more he thinks about leaving it all behind. The problem is Rebel is way more evil and way more ahead of Michael in what he thinks Michael's life should be like.

As Michael's birthday approaches Reb has a special surprise for him. You won't be able to stop reading this until the end. Written in a way that has you hoping for something good for Michael. Written in a way that evil will still surprise you when you least expect it.

Its the middle of the night and I just  finished this book. I hear something outside. I don't think I'll go to the window to look.

"Triple Threat" by Bella Jeanisse

GOES ON SALE TODAY SEPT. 25TH CLICK HERE

"I had to find away to tell him, before it was too late. He made me lose all my confidence, as if I weren't good enough for him. I knew it wasn't his doing. It was all me, but I had never been afraid to at least tell someone I liked them."    Crystal: from Triple Threat -Book One

Book One- Triple Threat:
This is a three story series featuring Crystal and her band mates Chad and Giovanni. There are other various band members and friends that come into play throughout. Triple Threat is the name of their band. In the first story Crystal has been friends with Chad since childhood. Chad loves Crystal but Crystal loves Giovanni. She thinks she can pull off a friends with benefits relationship with Chad. She knows she doesn't love Chad like she loves Giovanni.

The story is set with a mix of her love life and the gigs they play in a band called Triple Threat. Crystal isn't going to get what she wants because everyone thinks that Chad is her boyfriend. Guys are crawling over each other to try to get to Crystal. Seems like real life where we want the one who doesn't want us. Its probably happened to all of us in our young life at one point.

Lying about who you're having sex with when its more than one and they all know each other is likely going to lead to some awkward encounters. Crystal! What are you thinking? She's going to have to make up her mind though and steer things in the direction her heart wants her to.Then a brutal attacks changes everything.

Book Two- " Rubbed Raw" features Crystal picking up the pieces of her life after the attack. Her relationships are changing.  The friends who love her are doing everything they can to get her the help she needs. Suffering from post traumatic stress after the attack is ruling her life at this point. Can Giovanni and Chad get her the help she needs? Hopefully in time as they are getting ready to record their first album. Their careers in the rock and roll world are taking off.

A surprise gesture by their fans helps Crystal begin to heal and take control of her life. Unfortunately too late to stop all the men in her life from colliding and the consequences catching up to her and them. I did feel at some point that the men in her life tend to take advantage of her. Resorting to sex while she was asleep was a little over the top for me. They didn't respect her boundaries and I don't think she had a lot most of the time. At least let her be awake.

Book Three: "Reckless" This is the story of their lives before the Triple Threat band. The author is influenced by a lot of cool rock bands and is well versed in music, motorcycles and erotica.
"Reckless" features Crystal and Chad before their 18th birthdays and before the band Triple Threat is started and is still known as Reckless. It focuses on their relationship and how they came to be best friends. The story is before they decided to have sex. It was shorter then the others but kind of wrapped them and the other two stories together. Gave you a better feel for who Crystal and Chad are.

It was a fun read. A lot of sex to be honest. A lot. Still a good story line. The writer knows her music and her lifestyle narration. Crystal is too hot for her own good. It gets her into trouble. More than once. Her attack though at the end of book one was well written and did not make Crystal into a person who deserved to be attacked because of her casual lifestyle. I did like that about this authors approach of this situation.

I like the way this was written. I was attracted to her characters and the story line. A writer is gifted when you are drawn in and feel something for the characters. If you are affected by them or question things going on the writer has done an amazing job with her work. You don't have to agree with the way things are written you just have to be moved by the material in front of you. If the author makes you feel things you've found the right book.

Thank you Bella Jeanisse for a chance to read and review your work!

IT'S LIVE

This three pack includes Triple Threat, Rubbed Raw and Reckless. 14 chapters were added to this exclusive set. Book 1 of the Triple Threat series. Crystal Atkinson plays bass in the band Triple Threat, and her best friend Chad McLoughlin plays guitar. But that's not all they play together. When Crystal makes a deal for "no-strings-attached" sex with Chad, she thinks she's written the perfect arrangement for them. But two beats strike dissonant notes: Chad's been in love with Crystal for years, and Giovanni Saracino joins the band on drums. Soon, Crystal's finding herself caught between the warring impulses of her body and her soul. She'll never be in love with Chad the way he wants, but no-one else has ever made love to her like he does. Giovanni's got a heart bigger than his outsized biceps, and Crystal responds to that in ways she never imagined. Torn between the two men, both with plenty to offer her, Crystal has to choose between the needs of her heart and the aching demands from the rest of her body. Book 2 of the Triple Threat series. After being attacked by a home invader in Part One, Crystal Atkinson is trying to hold the pieces of her life together, despite her lingering terror. She's trying to maintain a relationship with her band's drummer, record a new CD, climb to the top of the East Coast music scene and deal with the fact that her best (male) friend is still in love with her. It's a volatile mix, and Crystal's emotions are just as turbulent as they find expression in a series of steamy encounters. She wants to move into the future with her drummer, Giovanni, but she's not entirely over her friend, Chad. As her future looms, Crystal's got a lot of hard decisions to make. Book .5 of the Triple Threat series. At 18, Crystal and Chad aren't quite the people they'll become. Chad is, of course, already consumed by his intense, but unconsummated love for Crystal and his obsessive need to protect her at all costs from a world that holds many hazards for a beautiful young woman. Crystal is still a virgin though, struggling with her own feelings for her best friend and her inchoate lusts. Sex is scary for Crystal, and she wants her first time to be special. On top of that, Crystal is beginning her future life as a musician, and the reality is nowhere near her rock and roll fantasies of stardom. It's a long road to the top for Crystal and Chad, but they're taking their first steps.

Bella Jeanisse hails from New York City. At 10 years old, Bella picked up her first guitar. She was
instantly hooked. Because of her deep passion for tall men, rock music, tattoos and motorcycles,
she has gotten to know many musicians and roadies over the years—in every possible way. And
although she has been writing risqué stories about musicians for many years, she has just recently
taken these tales to the next level revealing, through her protagonists, the hold some of these men
still have on her. They have inspired more than they ever imagined.
Now living in Florida with her three sons, she juggles domestic responsibilities, a social life, her
career as an IT professional and her writing as carefully as possible. They do cross paths as you
have seen in her first collection of short stories. Her life is busy and full, yet very fulfilling.
The few limits Bella puts on her love¬life may be found as but a shadow in her writing. She draws
from life, fantasy and inspiration to create each tale.
Bella has broadened her horizons to include short stories, Insatiable Appetites, with many more to
come, some just a sentence at this point. The subjects range from military men to biker chicks to
naughty doctors and much, much more. You can find a taste of the newest shorts on Wattpad.com.
The Triple Threat universe is growing... Gasoline 2 (Evolving Urges) is up next. Triple Threat 3
(Dual Desires) is finished. Soon enough you’ll also get to know Silverblade, Hands of Fate,
Winter Winds, Brass Monkey, Mark of the Devil and Wounded Hearts too...
so many hot rock stars, so little time to make them come to life.

I have been reading Karin Slaughter for only about the past five years. I found one of her books (Faithless) while shopping in a book store in Chattanooga TN. (McKay's) Mystery, Thriller. Psychological Thriller. Police Procedure. Cops and Dr.'s and bad guys. Written in such strong language with such description that this is something I was unable to put down. Karin has a way of shocking you when you least expect it. I began by reading the "Grant County" series. Then I back tracked and got all her books. Read all of them in order. Everyone of them came off with the same punch. Stunning. Going where other crime novels didn't venture. Language so descriptive and strong that I was always left with the book staying with me even after the last page. I couldn't stop thinking about it. So glad when I found out it was a series.

Even as I moved on to her other books and finished the "Grant County" series I'm still moved by the final book. I can't forget what happened and it still makes me sad for that character. You'll have to read and find out.  I moved onto the Will Trent series and then several stand alone books. The new one "Pretty Girls" is also a stand alone. Her series writing is just outstanding. Sometimes you read a series and notice that the characters change from one book to another. Karin writes as if she wrote all the books at the same time. They flow into one from the other seamlessly. Karin is really one of my all time favorite authors ever. Looking forward to her new book this coming week!

About the "Grant County" Series: Is set in the fictional town of Heartsdale, Georgia. (in the fictional Grant County) This series follows Sara Linton, the towns local pediatrician and part time coroner. Her ex husband Jeffrey Tolliver, who also happens to be the Chief of Police, and his detective Lena Adams. If you've ever lived in Georgia you will recognize landmarks in the book. The author is a native of Georgia.

Karin Slaughter is the #1 internationally bestselling author of several novels, including the Grant County series.

"First Kisses" by Dina Littner

Last night I came across a new author in my book group on Facebook. Her name is Dina Littner. She was offering anyone in the group a chance to read her new short story called "First Kisses." I thought why not, as the title alone seemed appealing and it interested me.

"First Kisses" is the charming and innocent story about three young friends who contemplate their first kiss. Jillian and her best friends, the brothers Caden and James. Caden volunteers to be Jillian's first kiss. I'm not going to tell you anything else. The story is just enough to make you think about your own first kiss. Sometimes a story doesn't have to be long to touch you.

I also think its meant as a "first" in other ways. The first story into the writing world as an author perhaps?  I see so many possibilities with this short story. The three characters that she has introduced could be the back drop for so many romantic stories in the future.

Her debut novel is coming out in early 2016, It seems that the new novel will also be a series with at least three books already listed. "Through an Open Door" the first in the "Impossible Choices" series. Followed by book two: "Under an Open Window." And the third in the series,  "On the Open Road a.k.a. Wheeler."

Debut Novel "Through an Open Door" early 2016 : click here!

Since "First Kisses" is not actually available publicly I would suggest contacting the author at her Facebook page if you are truly interested in her work.

This must be an exciting time for Dina! I hope you'll help me support a new author. She has shown with her short story that she's got a wonderful future ahead. I look forward to more of her work!

"Immortal Justice" by Faith V. Smith

"Mortals lived in a world of fantasy, sin and hope. For those who cried out for help, it was Michael's job to do all he could to keep them safe until they made a choice of commitment to grace or not. A job that became harder and harder every millennium."

After the death of his family,  Darach has been chosen by the archangel Michael to become an immortal with a mission. Even though Darach would rather be reunited in death with his family he has been sent to destroy the demons and the evil mortals of the world, to become a seeker of justice. After decades of training Darach has been sent to modern day New Orleans and is seeking to prevent crimes and save souls if possible.  He's also looking for revenge for the demon Angus who killed him and his family.

Abby is trying to support her self after her grandmothers passing  by working in a club as a singer at night. Days are spent working in a school.  She is gifted with visions in a way that she is able to recognize the demons that roam New Orleans.  A fateful night brings Darach and Abby together.  To protect her, Michael orders Darach to stay by her side. Will they be able to resist each other even though Michael has ordered Darach to tend to business? There is an attraction that neither can deny.

Darach and his detective friend Sean are in search of Angus.  They must find him before Angus finds Darach and possibly Abbie. Filled with friendship and courtship, love and battles of demons that roam the streets.  Will Darach continue to walk the earth or will he be reunited in death with his beloved family? Will Abbie fit into this life of an immortal, or will she have to find another path without him?

This is not my usual genre but I was quickly drawn in. The author has the ability to write in a way that captures your attention and mesmerizes you. Fast paced so that you want to keep going to find out whats next. You know the kind of book you think you'll just read one more page? I found myself awake at 4am. I did look up the word "Highlander" because I was unfamiliar with this genre. Laugh if you must. That's what reading is about is it not? Learning new things. So I found out that Highlander means: a person from the Scottish Highlands. So that explains that accent as Darach spoke throughout the book!

What a great ending! I can't say more but I loved this story and I loved the way the last few pages made me feel about the entire book.

Thank you Faith V. Smith for this copy to read and giving me a chance to love a new book.

This weeks feature author is Brenda Novak. A friend led me to her site, so thank you Tania Ellison. After checking out Brenda's page I see there are a lots of great books there for you to read. She has much to choose from but you'll probably want to read them all. What made me want to feature her this week? First of all this book seems to be my kind of read. I also notice a lot of great comments on her page for her work. Then I noticed that she personally answered the comments left for her. I don't know about you but when an author takes the time to do that it means something to me. It means they care about the people who support their work. In turn I do what I can to help support that author. You can buy the books, but let the author know how you feel about their work.

Brenda's work falls along the lines of mystery and romantic suspense. I look forward to reading her books. Brenda's start in the author world is one that I hope as a parent you never have to face. Be sure and read her background and bio information. Her books have been on the New York Times and USA Today best sellers lists. I love finding a new to me author with a great list to choose from. I'm happy to share my find with you!

After reading the synopsis for this book I think you'll find its well worth checking out.

from Amazon:

Welcome to Hanover House….

Psychiatrist Evelyn Talbot has dedicated her life to solving the mysteries of the antisocial mind. Why do psychopaths act as they do? How do they come to be? Why don’t they feel any remorse for the suffering they cause? And are there better ways of spotting and stopping them?

After having been kidnapped, tortured and left for dead when she was just a teenager—by her high school boyfriend—she’s determined to understand how someone she trusted so much could turn on her. So she’s established a revolutionary new medical health center in the remote town of Hilltop, Alaska, where she studies the worst of the worst.

But not everyone in Hilltop is excited to have Hanover House and its many serial killers in the area. Alaskan State Trooper, Sergeant Amarok, is one of them. And yet he can’t help feeling bad about what Evelyn has been through. He’s even attracted to her. Which is partly why he worries.

He knows what could happen if only one little thing goes wrong...

I also found this little gold nugget too that really interests me:

About Brenda:
From Amazon:  Biography
Brenda Novak Bio

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including four Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best and the National Reader's Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.4 million. "Protect and Serve" on sale today!

This review was recently published. I decided to share again with you today to remind you this book is on sale today! Great anthology and its 11 stories for .99 cents! You can't go wrong!

From former service people to cops and detectives on the street this anthology covers our people in uniform and plain clothes. Men and women showing their desire to protect and serve a few things. Some romance tinged with crime and survival  and life changing choices.

All the stories are well written. Not every story was my kind of reading but thats not to say you won't like it! I enjoyed some things I previously have shied away from. Take for example "Tea, Theft and Scones." Does that sound like a group of little old ladies and a story to put you to sleep? You'd be wrong. It was a cute story with some hunky men and interesting women. Love the dog in this story! Poor Fugly. Entertaining and amusing. It was nice to be surprised by something I was thinking that I may skip in the book.  I'm glad I didn't.

My favorite story was probably "Uncertain Blue" by Jamie Lee Scott. Officer Dane Briggs stumbles upon a child hood friend and things are about to come unglued. Can a drug addicted woman turn her life around?  Is Officer Briggs going to risk everything to help her just because he knew her way back when? An entertaining novella that fits in with the "Uncertain Suspense" series.  A little bit of romance along with a little bit of breaking the law.  This is one author I look forward to reading more books in this series.

With 11 short stories or novellas to choose from be sure and read them all. The entire book overall was put together with  authors that meshed quite well.  Spend a little time today with those who "Protect and Serve."

"The Good Neighbor" by A.J. Banner

"On a street like Sitka Lane, with only six spacious, identical houses, it was difficult-but not impossible-to keep secrets. I would watch the neighbors come and go, but nobody knew what truly went on inside each home."

Sarah and Dr. Johnny McDonald live in a peaceful, quaint town in a neighborhood where people actually care about one another. One horrible night tragedy strikes that forever changes their little corner of paradise. It won't just be paradise that is forever changed. Sarah stumbles upon secrets and lies as she tries to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Sarah's friend Natalie sensed a forthcoming tragedy but Sarah didn't take it to heart. Not until she realized how much trouble she is in does she realize how right Natalie was.

From the opening chapter this book reaches out and pulls you in. Sarah suspects others of complicity in the death of her friends. Can her own husband even be trusted? Sarah alone will have to bring to light the neighbors undermining role in her life and that of her husband's. There is a little girl that needs her help along with Jessie, a teenager making life altering bad choices. Could Jessie's creepy boyfriend be behind the neighborhood tragedy? Sarah is certain she can uncover what is really going on in Shadow Cove.

Shocking and compelling, people are not who they appear to be and not who you'd suspect. When you get to the point where you think you know who did what keep reading.  You'll be surprised it's not who you think.  Enthralling with a "let me read just one more page" turning kind of suspense. The kind that will keep you awake at night so you can finish it! The kind that will make you look at your neighbors just a little differently in the morning light.
Thank you to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for the allowing me an A.R.C.

Thursdays Feature Author: Faith V. Smith

Meet this week's featured author: Faith V. Smith:

Faith started out as an author but has worked many sides of the industry. From writing to reviewing to editing and marketing to working on the "Wild Rose Press" staff. Faith has written reviews at "Bridges Magazine," " Myshelf.com," (where we met!)  and more recently "Romantic Times Book Reviews."  She is also a community leader on the "Romance Board" at Ivillage.com.

I am currently reading her work titled "Immortal Justice" and I think you'll be interested in picking this one up. Faith described it to me as a "paranormal romance with a immortal highlander"  and that caught my attention. Take a look!

                                                          Review coming soon!

On a personal note I've had the pleasure of actually meeting Faith in person. It was by sheer accident when she recognized me in a Dr.'s office. We worked online together at Myshelf.com over a period of many years. In my travels I ended up moving to the same town as Faith! Imagine both our surprise. I'm glad that we met. She is truly a nice woman. I think you will thoroughly enjoy her work. I'm only too happy to share her with others and hope that you'll come to fall in love with her books.  Did someone say words like vampires, paranormal, highlander, time travel? ... then there is something for you sugared with romance.
